The Chief Magistrate of Osogbo has remanded a mother, 45, and her two sons at Iles Correctional Centre, for allegedly stealing cocoa beans running to the tune of N4.5 million.
The three suspects are Ayanda Olubunmi (45), Joshua Iyanda (24), and Prosper Iyanda (21).
The three were charged with conspiring to steal cocoa beans worth N4.5 million, belonging to Mr. Akeem Obidiran of Temidire Village in Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State.
The suspects were arraigned on two counts: conspiracy and theft, under section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State 2002.
The court read the charges aloud, stating that the suspects unlawfully removed cocoa beans from the residence of Mr. Obidiran, thereby committing felony theft.
The stolen cocoa beans, valued at N4.5 million, were found in the suspects’ possession after they had initially fled the scene.
The Amotekun Corps, acting on a formal complaint filed by Mr. Obidiran, apprehended the suspects while they were en route to sell the stolen goods.
During court proceedings, the suspects admitted to their involvement in the crime, confirming their participation in the theft and burglary. They further stated that this was their first criminal offense.
The case, which was brought to court by the Osun Amotekun Corps through the Attorney General of Osun State, led to the court’s decision to remand the suspects in the Ilesa Correctional Centre pending further proceedings. The next hearing is set for January 29, 2025.
