March 29, 2025, Edo State

In a shocking turn of events, seven Fulani men, believed to be involved in kidnapping activities, were killed by a group of local youth in Uromi, Edo State, on Thursday. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, sparking a wave of tension in the community.

The youths, who were reportedly angered by a series of recent kidnappings and attacks in the region, took matters into their own hands when they discovered a group of men they suspected to be responsible for these criminal activities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims, identified as northern Hausa hunters, were stopped by local security while travelling in a commercial truck.

A search of the vehicle uncovered guns, triggering a mob attack by residents who accused them of being kidnappers and Fulani herdsmen.

The confrontation escalated quickly, leading to the deaths of the seven men. Local authorities have since confirmed the identities of the deceased as Fulani herders.

The incident has drawn a range of reactions, with some local residents expressing support for the actions of the youths, citing the growing frustration with the escalating insecurity in the area. Many believe that the government has not done enough to curb the kidnapping epidemic plaguing the state.

However, there has also been condemnation from human rights groups, who have called for an immediate investigation into the killings, stressing the need for due process and the rule of law to be respected. They warned against vigilante justice, which they argue could further escalate violence and lead to more innocent lives being lost.

The Edo State Police Command has assured the public that investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the deaths. “We are aware of the incident, and we are conducting a thorough investigation,” said a spokesperson for the police. “We call on all citizens to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to report any criminal activities to the proper authorities.”

While the identity of the group responsible for the killings remains unclear, many in the community fear that this act of violence could spark further unrest and retaliation. Authorities have called for calm, urging both residents and Fulani herders to cooperate with security forces in order to restore peace and order to the region.

As of now, the situation in Uromi remains tense, with security personnel deployed in strategic areas to maintain order and prevent further clashes.
